It's been awhile, yet again. This past summer/early fall was very busy, as well as heartbreaking (my dad passed away after a long battle with cancer). Therefore, I have not been shooting as much as usual nor able to teach workshops, but will be resuming these things hopefully soon-ish.

On the bright side of things, I've gotten my first printed magazine feature in the latest edition of Outdoor Photography Canada (Fall/Winter edition). If you see it around, check it out and let me know what you thought about the article :)

Our newest workshop/tour is going to be set in the Canadian Rockies this winter (January 23rd-27th). If you're interested in exploring ice caves, frozen waterfalls, Abraham Lake (the lake famous for its frozen methane bubbles) and up for adventure (we'll be staying in rustic accommodations!) then have a look:… This one is going to be fun!

What's new with everybody here? Any new gear purchases? Have you been on any trips, explored any new places? Let me know!
...hey there everyone

How have you all been?

Just thought I'd post a little update. It's been just over 4 years since I dove headfirst into photography, and for some reason I've been thinking about that fact a lot lately.

I really meant to use DA more regularly over the winter, but somehow the winter slipped by...I was surprised, looking at the deviations I've submitted - I thought I'd submitted more. I've been busy with some personal stuff as well as 'professional development' whatever that means. I've been lucky to be part of Banff Photo Workshops & Tours as a co-leader for group workshops held mostly in the back country of National Parks here in Canada, both in 2015 and for 2016, and we have some exciting things in the works for the future.

I guess I just want to say thank you to all of you, deviantART has been such an amazing place for learning and for getting helpful critiques. And when I am feeling a bit stuck creatively, this website has been so helpful in getting that fire restoked. So, THANK YOU!

Have a great rest of your weekend everyone, and let me know how you've been doing!

Calling all ladies!

Myself and two other female landscape photographers (islandtime and Dani-Lefrancois) are hosting a "Women in the Backcountry" photography workshop adventure in July, 2015 in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada at a backcountry lodge nestled in the mountains. We'll be shooting sunrises, sunsets and even some stars. If this sounds like something you or a friend would enjoy, check out the link below for some more information.

Happy New Years Eve everybody! Hope everyone has a fun and safe night bringing in 2015. Here's a look back at the year with a selection of my fave photographs I managed to grab along the way (in the version of a blog entry on my website):

Wishing everyone the best for 2015!

Hey, has anyone else been checking out the new social media site Ello? Here's a link to my profile for those who have joined;
The image quality is so much nicer than Facebook, and I'm really enjoying the minimalist design. It's still in Beta, but it looks good so far!
First of all, a big thanks to BokehLight for suggesting my photo for a Daily Deviation, and thank you to Anoya for featuring it!

And the update: I'm so busy with work that I'm finding I don't have the time to be on as much as I'd like to (I check DA in the mornings amongst other sites) but may not reply as quickly as I try to normally. Things should technically slow down a little as winter approaches, though :)

We are going to try to get away and in to the mountains toward the end of the month - I haven't been shooting as many landscapes as I'd like to, so hoping to stock up on some images when we go. Banff just got their first significant snowfall, so not sure what we may end up heading in to - was hoping to snag some fall colours, but if it snows that's going to be interesting as well. :)

Thanks as always for the support!

Facebook Pages/AM Feature

Wed May 14, 2014, 8:37 AM
Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've written a journal.
Do you have a Facebook page for your art? If so, have you noticed how small a percentage of followers are actually seeing  your posts? It is because they want you to advertise your posts to reach the people who have liked your page.
With this in mind, I've now made my Facebook Profile public and follow-able (?) :D If you're following my Facebook Page, but haven't seen an update in a while, feel free to follow me here:…;
And please link your own pages, webpages, profiles, whatever you like in the comments so I can come and follow you. :D

Coming Home by JaclynTanemura

I'm missing cruising this site, but work has been
relentless lately, and today I have finally found the time to take a deep breath,
grab a coffee and actually do something non-work related for more than five minutes.

Thank you so much  DanielHeydecke for the suggestion, and  ginkgografix  for the feature!

I have been on enough to :+fav: a few things every now and then, and so on to the feature. These are just
a few of the awesome works I've seen lately.

If you'd like to skip straight to the before/after/progress part, scroll down. :boogie:

I just noticed that it is my 2 year anniversary/birthday/what-have-you here on DA. Life has changed so much in these past two years, and it all started with deviantART.  When I first joined deviantART, I don't know what I was hoping to accomplish. I had a friend on here, so I thought, hey, why not? I love photography, too. So, I joined and uploaded my first photo.

*The reason for this entry is because for the past fifteen minutes, I've been itching to delete a lot of my photos from my gallery. Because a lot of them are very, very bad :P

With the advice of a lot of different people, I started to pay closer to my compositions, and discovered HDR. Now, I don't do HDR in the traditional sense nowadays (with a software like Photomatix or NIK HDR Efex; I hand blend if needed.) However, discovering and attempting to do HDR really, really opened my mind up to a lot of possibilities. My thought's ran along the lines of "How did they get that picture to look so cool?? What I really wanted to know was, how did they accomplish such high dynamic range in one photograph? How do they make it (they being masters of their craft) look so clean and realistic? I couldn't seem to imitate that effect in my HDR software, no matter what I did. The results were grainy, riddled with halos and just overall sloppy. Then I discovered graduated ND filters, and from there everything took off. Photography, instead of a hobby that I really, really enjoyed, became an obsession. With every photograph I uploaded, or still upload, I can see where I need to do something differently next time to make it better. If I let myself, I'll end up deleting 90% of my gallery!

In midst of me obsessively researching/experimenting/posting results, I had people around me encouraging me to start a photography Facebook Page. I felt pretty silly about this - I don't consider myself a professional. But I did, and I'm glad I did, because through that, my now partner-in-crime found me on there, then approached me about collaborating with her. So off I went - you might know her from deviantART - I grabbed this opportunity, and I'm glad I did; I have learned so much in the past few months it isn't even funny. And from there, my well loved hobby somehow turned into a career. I never planned for it to happen, but there you go. Sorry for such a long-winded entry! But this last paragraph is also why I have been so inactive lately. I just haven't had time to be on here! When we launch our website, I will post the link on here.

To all my watchers - thank you so much for all your support. I will always make an effort to respond to every comment. Winter should be a little slower - not that it has felt like that so far - but I should be able to get out and shoot more landscapes; that is, after all, my favorite thing to do!

Post your Progress

And now I'd like to get the the comparisons part of this entry! Below I will post the very first photo I uploaded on deviantART, and next to it, (or below it, depending on your screen size) my most recent one. Feel free to post your first deviation and your last one in the comments - let's look at what has changed! :aww:

The Cresent Moon by JaclynTanemuraBlaze by JaclynTanemura

I remember taking that first one and thinking how cool it'd look if I used a Tungsten white balance. And wow, major sensor dust! Haha.) Funny - both photos are from the same location.

On that note, I think this is the last journal entry I will make this year. Merry Christmas, everyone! Have a Happy New Year! :boogie:

AM Inspiration 006 - Photography (and update)

Journal Entry: Wed Oct 2, 2013, 9:55 AM
   Good morning. :)

I have been very inactive on deviantART for a while now, and I thought I'd drop in for a small update. I've been researching and studying wedding photography, as it looks like next year is going to have several - I have been learning under a very talented photographer here, and shooting with her; it's been a really interesting experience. I will be second shooting for her next year. Again, it changes the way I see everything. When I first began landscape photography, I thought it was phenomenal how the world was suddenly completely new again. It is the same with people now. I see them differently now, haha! I've been lucky enough to go along and quietly shoot with the two of them (main photog and second shooter) just for the experience. With each wedding, I see something I could have done differently. And now that the last wedding of the season has passed, I am chomping at the bit for next year's wedding season - I've got some ideas I want to try out! Anyway!

My husband and I bought our first house, so we're super stoked about that. We get possession on Halloween! Heheh. Soo between all the meetings that go along with that, plus the running of our electrical company, plus trying to juggle shooting some landscapes as well as a wedding here and there - life's been crazy. I'm now also offering my services commercially, which has been kind of fun. I was really excited to get my first commercial job because of my landscape portfolio back in August. At that point, I was thinking about letting my website run out. Literally the last day it was up, I was hired commercially, and I decided to renew the website.

I am planning on getting out to catch some of that pretty autumn colour that's popping out right now. Hopefully I'll be able to get something I can upload here.

I am more active on my Facebook page - if you're interested, I'll provide the link below.

   Onward to the feature!

Quick Update

Tue Aug 20, 2013, 8:28 PM
Hello, how has everyone been?

I have my computer back finally, and I wanted to just update my journal. As it turns out, my video card had been recalled, so I'm relieved that the issue seems to be fixed now (fingers crossed!)

I will be on deviantART more once I've caught  up with my work. Because my computer was away for repair, I have fallen very far behind. I will get on as much as I can and try to keep active, however!

I want to continue my AM/PM features, and definitely will - once things are less chaotic!

Thanks again for all the support. You are all very appreciated

First DD

I am so thankful for the positive support I have received on this site, and the constructive feedback. Thank you so much for the DD, Kaz-D and AgonizingSwordfish !!! (Sorry it took me so long, I have been computer-less.)

Rainbow Road by JaclynTanemura

I've recently gotten an opportunity to learn from a very talented photographer how to do weddings/get some wedding experience, so I've been kept very busy with that. Now that I have my computer back (fingers crossed that it keeps working...) I will be able to slowly respond to any comments or messages that I've received during my absence.

Thank you for your support, each and every single one of you is appreciated more than you can know!

My computer unfortunately is unusable once more - I will reply to comments and messages when I finally have an operating machine again!

Computer Crashes and Backups

Wed Jul 31, 2013, 10:57 AM
Hey, how has everyone been?

My computer had a major meltdown (literally) and therefore the untimely death of my 18 month old iMac. My warranty/Apple care ran out in February, unfortunately.  I will be ordering a different computer to be built, but it will be two to three weeks before I have it in my office.

I am 99% certain all my photos were backed up on my external hard drive. This experience really nails home just how important back ups are!

What is your backup method?

Mine is an external hard drive that backs up 24/7 (or whenever my computer is on) and then once a week, I pull another hard drive out of my desk and do a complete backup in case there is something wrong/something happens to the main backup. I'd be curious to hear about everyone else's methods. Does anyone use a digital archiver?

Let me know!

quick update and random rant

Sun Jun 9, 2013, 12:27 AM
Rant first, so if you want to skip that, feel more than free :D

I have noticed a lot of hate on deviantART lately surrounding the topic of post processing a photo via Photoshop. I assume the people referring to it so hatefully are simply unaware of what they are truly accusing people of doing.

Let me just say something about this, first of all.

Photography is an art. It is expression. It is very personal.

Second of all, in a technical view, if you shoot RAW, your photo needs a certain amount of post processing. Your photo will not be exactly as you saw it at a scene - it may be very close, but to an expert discerning eye, perhaps your RAW image file needs a touch more contrast to represent the scene as it was truly seen.

Also keep in mind that everyone interprets scenes differently than you do.

If you shoot in JPEG format - guess what? Your camera is post-processing your photo. :D

And lastly - the first part of taking the photo is the taking of the photo itself. The second part, and I believe this is an Ansel Adams quote (forgive me if I have misquoted) "performing the photo." The post processing is where you can put your personal touch on the photo, whether it be subtle or loud.

I find it bewildering that people point out that Photoshop was used during the post processing process in such a negative way. I think it's pretty obnoxious to criticize someone's art, simply to insult and not help in the long run.  Also, post processing has always been a part of photography.

So, in case you were never taught - 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Although, if critique was requested, fire away ;)

Whew! Okay /rantover.

Here's a cute kitten to make up for the rant:

Quick Update

Life has been very, very busy lately. I have been getting on deviantART just about every day, though I am not spending as much time I was on it. I bought a car today, because our truck is a little bit crazy expensive to run with these new gas prices. So, I opted for something with a little more fuel efficiency.

Running a company takes up a lot of time. I have been lucky to get out shooting once a week, though I am hoping to get out more often as it becomes warmer...we'll see. Summer time seems to fly by very quickly up here.

I will be doing my AM Inspiration Features on and off, basically with the same rhythm that they've been coming out. Which is fairly unpredictable at the moment  but I plan to continue them indefinitely!

I think I have some photos I want to process and upload, and I definitely will as soon as I find the time. I'm going to be on - I promise! I just may respond slower to comments and watches than usual. I really appreciate all the support! Thank you guys! And girls, of course.
